In the 21st century there’s no such thing as a four-door convertible. Yet.
But Mercedes-Benz is out to break the soft-top rules with its enormous Ocean Drive concept car.
Quite possibly the ultimate in luxury open-top cruisers, the one-off Ocean Drive show car is effectively an S-Class limousine with a convertible roof.
That means it’s loaded with luxury trimmings, including power seats all round, sumptuous leather pews, a top-end sound system and all manner of luxury gadgets.
Oh yeah, and space to spare. Those unfortunate enough (or should that be lucky enough) to be relegated to the rear seats, will find it easy to jump in and comfy once settled in.
That’s because the Ocean Drive has four doors, unlike the usual two larger doors used on all other convertibles.
A twin-turbocharged V12 should also ensure the Ocean Drive gets up to speed briskly enough.
But no word yet on how such a heavy vehicle would go when it comes to body rigidity; never a strong suit for convertibles, especially for ones that weight well over two tonnes.
Still, the Ocean Drive certainly turns some heads and oozes presence.
It’s the sort of car you could imagine cruising along the Californian coast or stealing some glances at Monaco.A statement from Mercedes said: “The Concept Ocean Drive inspires automotive dreams — but its purpose is also to reach out to customers and find out how the public is reacting to new automotive ideas.”
