As one of the largest and most important auto shows in the Middle East, the annual Qatar Motor Show's primary goal is to serve as the launching pad for the local debut of the industry's latest models before they arrive in showrooms.
That said, with the exception of some non-significant debuts such as the one-off, black and yellow themed Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport that we told about on Monday, the show doesn't host any noteworthy world premieres.
Nevertheless, for those of you that want to get a sample of the 2012 edition of the Qatar Motor Show that will be open to the general public from January 25 to 28, we've prepared a high-resolution gallery that you can check out for yourself right after the break.
After a three-year hiatus, the most famous rally in the world, the Rallye Monte Carlo, has returned to the WRC calendar. As it was the 80th event, the Automobile Club de Monaco, which organized the race, decided to design a route that combined memories of past years with demanding stages.
The 2012 Monte Carlo rally started on January 17 with a ceremony north of Monaco, in the city of Valence. The real action, which consisted of 430 kilometers (267 miles) spread over 18 special stages, begun three days later, on January 20.
After the production of a fleet of 10 electrically powered Octavia Green E Line models last fall, Skoda is entering the second phase of its EV project as it commenced road tests around the Czech city of Mladà Boleslav, which is located about 50 km northeast of Prague.
The company's goal is to gain practical experience with electric propulsion in real life conditions as it prepares for the presentation of an actual production model.
Parts and platform sharing has been a common practice in big automotive groups. Volkswagen, which has been pioneering this method among its brands since the early ‘90s, has mastered the art. Still, there is always room for improvement...
The VW Group wants to push the envelope further with a much broader parts sharing program among the various brands and models in its empire, starting with the new Audi A3 that will be launched in 2012.
The good times continue to roll for the Volkswagen Group's Skoda division that has just built the 1,500,000th example of its second-generation Octavia model, with the aforementioned figure not including the production numbers of the structurally identical "MingRui" that is sold in China.
The anniversary vehicle is a white Octavia Combi ‘GreenLine’, which rolled off the assembly line at the Czech company’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav on Wednesday.
We're not sure why, but Skoda has released a new gallery of pictures of its VisionD concept that we first laid eyes on at the Geneva Motor Show back in March 2011.
Perhaps it is because the Czech automaker would like to refresh our memory on the design of the VisionD, which according to the company, offers a "clear indication" of the future styling direction for all Skoda models.
That or the VW Group owned company wants to show us how good the VisionD looks alongside a pretty woman...
This is one of those print adverts that you may not be sure what is being promoted upon a first glance but you'll definitely remember once you get it and start smiling.
The ad is for the European market Skoda Superb, a spacious mid-size saloon (available as an Estate as well) based on a stretched version of the VW Passat's platform, and it highlights the saloon's automatic ambient lighting positioned under the doors and exterior rear-view mirrors by showing a middle-age man wearing red heels and fence net stockings.
Whereas the rest of the European carmakers such as PSA Peugeot and Citroen and the Fiat Group are facing troubled times, the German auto industry is enjoying one of its most prosperous eras ever.
On Thursday, Europe's largest automaker, the Volkswagen Group, announced that it has earned more in the first nine months of 2011 than in the whole of 2010.
The company's operating profit surged to €9.0 billion (US$12.5 billion) from January through September, up from €7.1 billion in fiscal 2010 and €4.8 billion in the same period last year, which represents a staggering 86 percent increase.
Skoda won last weekend’s RACC Rally of Spain and with it, the Super 2000 World Rally Championship – the first rally title in the company's 110-year old history.
Juho Hanninen and Mikko Markkula completed 18 stages and 406.5 km (252.6 miles), the longest event in the calendar, over both tarmac and gravel. After three days, they brought their Skoda Fabia S2000 to the finish line in first place in their class and 10th overall to win the title after their main rival, the Estonian Ott Tanak, retired on the first day.
After being officially presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the MissionL made by Skoda is finally hitting the road, proving that it’s a fully functional concept besides an attractive look of what is supposed to be a new low-cost sedan that will rival the cheap Dacia (Renault) Logan.
The Czech automaker still didn’t provide any details about the MissionL’s engine, performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but the production version is expected to be powered by units under 1.6 liters in naturally aspirated forms, just like the “Romanian” car.
“This new compact model, along with other new products to follow, will enable us to accomplish our goal increasing global annuals sales to 1.5 million vehicles by 2018. We are going to present a new car approximately every six months over the next few years”, said the Skoda Board Chairman Winfried Vahland during the Frankfurt Motor Show MissionL unveiling.
The new Skoda low-cost vehicle is expected to be placed between the Fabia and the Octavia models and will be sold at first in markets like Russia, China and India, but the European version could have better quality materials and a larger cabin.
You can watch the Skoda MissionL Concept video on the road below. Enjoy!
