Acura Presents Redesign 2013 RDX "Prototype", Ditches Turbocharged Four for a V6

The third Acura prototype to debut at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show today is the 2013 RDX crossover and just like the ILX compact sedan, there's nothing really conceptual about it as what you see here is what you'll get when the redesigned crossover model arrives in dealerships across the country in Spring 2012.

The second generation of Acura's five-passenger crossover has grown in size featuring a longer wheelbase and wider tracks that result in more passenger room, and increased cargo volume.

The styling both inside and out is intentionally more mainstream though Acura's beak-like front grille remains.

Acura Dresses Up the Civic as the New ILX Compact Sedan, goes on Sale this Spring [Video]

While the NSX Concept is the undisputed star of Acura's booth at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, the Japanese automaker also brought along a more down-to-earth study that is the precursor to the new ILX luxury compact sedan.

This is the New Acura / Honda NSX Sports Hybrid Concept that will Enter Production by 2015

Acura has just introduced the NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and these are the first official photos.

The Japanese automaker has shown several concept models over the years for a replacement to the iconic Honda / Acura NSX that was built from 1990 until 2005, but for one reason or the other, none of them managed to reach the production phase

This time, however, Acura says the NSX Concept is the real deal with the production model to debut within the next three years. Interestingly, Acura says that it will developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas, and manufactured in Ohio, at a yet to be named facility.

Like the original model, the NSX features a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V6 engine but with a twist; Acura's engineers added the firm's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system that utilizes three electric motors.

The one thing we knew for sure after the manufacturing disruptions in Japan caused by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami was that Lexus wasn’t going to top the premium segment in the U.S. market for the first time in a decade. 2011 U.S. Sales: Detroit's Big 3 and Koreans Report Strong Gains, Honda and Toyota Feel the Pinch

In the year that just ended, some automakers have a lot to be grateful for while others including Japan's biggest car brands would rather forget due to the Tsunami as well as the Thailand floods that significantly hurt their production lines during 2011.

Starting with the American carmakers, General Motors saw its U.S. sales rise 13.7 percent last year to 2,503,820 units. Chevrolet led the way with 1,775,812 units (+13.4%) followed by GMC at 397,986 (+18.8%), Buick at 177,633 (+14.3%) and Cadillac at 152,389 (+3.7%).

Honda Orders Dealers to Halt Sales of Certain Used Models until Airbag Problem is Solved

An airbag-related issue has made Honda tell its dealers to stop sales of certain used cars until a recall campaign to fix the defect is carried out.

Honda took the decision in spite of the fact that federal law requires automakers only to stop selling new cars when a recall campaign is issued, as it does not demand the same for used vehicles.

New Acura ILX will Likely Replace the TSX, gets 2.0L, 2.4L and Hybrid Powerplants

Honda is planning a major overhaul for its Acura brand, which hasn't been performing well lately. Total U.S. sales for Acura in November were 9,909 units, down 11.2 percent, while year-to-date sales totaled 110,170 vehicles, a 7.1 percent drop from the same period last year.

At a recent media briefing in Las Vegas, Acura told reporters that with the exception of the next generation of the NSX, which will be shown in concept form at the Detroit auto show, the company will focus on offering "mid-level premium vehicles that favor fuel economy over performance".

The company's plans include the introduction of a new RL, a mid-life facelift for the RDX crossover and the brand-new ILX compact sedan that is scheduled to reach dealerships next spring.

On its article about the 2013 RL, C&D reported that Honda wants to reduce its sedan lineup to three models, which means that one of the TL or TSX may eventually receive the axe.

Acura to Introduce New RL Sedan at the 2012 New York Auto Show

Acura CSX: Canada's Posh Honda Civic Sedan

New Acura ILX Compact Sedan to be Built at Honda's Plant in Indiana, will Start Well Under $30,000

Powertrain

Exterior

RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the crossover SUV's sporty athleticism. Large wheel arches, aggressively styled body sides, steeply raked windscreen and a short rear overhang generate an RDX with a taut and muscular presence. Interior

Safety and Security

The RDX's technology leadership also extends to safety, where a long list of advanced features are used— including an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE™ employs a network of interconnected frame structures that work to absorb and redirect frontal collision forces away from the passenger cabin while simultaneously helping improve crash compatibility with vehicles of different sizes.

In addition, a special frame member located below the RDX's front bumper is designed to engage the front bumper of a lower vehicle, allowing the bumper systems of both vehicles to attenuate crash energy more efficiently. Powertrain
The advanced technology built into the 2012 RL includes a 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine that develops 300 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque thanks to an innovative VTEC® valvetrain system for both the intake and exhaust valves, a high compression ratio, along with a special dual-stage magnesium intake manifold that enables the intake to function as a single- or dual-plenum manifold design based on engine operating parameters. In addition to generating excellent power, the RL engine meets the latest EPA TIER 2 - BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards.

A Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission is used that not only generates strong acceleration performance, but also helps deliver good fuel economy. In addition, the 6-speed transmission teams with a multi-clutch torque converter that has an advanced converter lock-up assembly with multiple lock-up disks that generate nearly double the facing area of a typical torque converter. The lock-up assembly not only reduces heat build-up during operation, but also allows for lock-up activation during a much wider range of driving conditions, which is instrumental in allowing the RL to achieve an EPA rated* city/highway/combined fuel economy of 17/24/20 mpg.
The Sequential SportShift 6-speed transmission can be shifted via a console mounted straight gate shifter or by racing-inspired paddle shifters mounted on the back of the steering wheel.

The RL's acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system simultaneously provides an exhilarating driving experience as well as peace of mind— regardless of most weather conditions. In addition to the numerous traction advantages of all-wheel drive, SH-AWD™ utilizes torque vectoring (the increase of rotation speed of an outside rear wheel) to create a "yaw moment" to help the RL turn more effectively while under power. Such a yaw moment reduces the cornering load on the front tires to minimize understeer, to improve handling balance and to escalate total cornering grip.

Body and Chassis
To complement the high-performance powertrain, Acura engineers gave the RL a rigid yet lightweight Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. A strong body was critical for achieving the engineers' high targets for steering and handling precision, outstanding ride quality, isolation of undesirable road inputs along with excellent safety.

The RL's body is constructed primarily of high tensile strength steel, while the hood, trunk lid, front fenders and bumper beams are made of lightweight aluminum. A sophisticated four-wheel independent suspension system with double-wishbone (front) and multi-link (rear) architecture, isolated front and rear subframes, large diameter stabilizer bars and heavy-duty steering rack components works in concert with the rigid unit body construction to complete the RL's chassis layout. Subframes and suspension components made of aluminum reduce the RL's weight for improved performance, better fuel economy and more supple suspension action.

To provide excellent handling and looks, 18x8-inch diameter 15-spoke aluminum wheels are matched with performance-minded Michelin Pilot all-season tires. While the wheels add a look of visual sophistication, they also deliver mechanical sophistication thanks to the use of resonator wheel technology.

In an effort to quell road noise transmitted to the RL's cabin, the unique noise reducing wheel uses a polypropylene Helmholtz resonator that encircles the center portion of the inside of the wheel. Such resonator wheel technology significantly lowers middle frequency noise (between 100 and 500 hertz). Combined with the added use of insulation material on the floorboard areas of the RL, there is a 1.3 dB reduction in interior noise— which translates to a 15-percent improvement.

Powerful, responsive and predictable braking is supplied by a four-wheel disc brake system utilizing 4-piston aluminum front brake calipers matched with 12.6-inch diameter ventilated front brake rotors. At the rear, 12.2-inch solid brake rotors team with large single-piston calipers. Braking is further aided by the use of a four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

When equipped with the Advance Package, linked to the RL's braking system is Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that uses a grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar unit to monitor the distance between the RL and the vehicle directly ahead. ACC can regulate the RL's speed to maintain a pre-set following distance interval between it and the vehicle directly ahead. If following distance becomes too close, the ACC system warns the driver and applies the brakes if necessary.

The RL with Advance Package includes Acura's Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™). Using millimeter-wave technology, CMBS™ monitors the distance and closing rate between the RL and the vehicle directly in front of it. CMBS™ then uses the information to continuously calculate the likelihood of a frontal collision as well as to alert the driver in different stages of urgency. If the likelihood of a collision significantly increases, CMBS™ will take actions such as to apply the brakes and pre-tension the front seatbelts.

Exterior and Interior
The 2012 RL's exterior styling is not only distinctive and upscale, but delivers excellent aerodynamics and a stable feel at higher speeds. At the front of the RL is a grill that teams with the athletically styled body to give visual indication of the vehicle's performance capabilities— capabilities that allow it to challenge the most capable German and Japanese sports sedans. Comfort, quietness and ride quality are also on a par with performance sedan competitors.

RL models equipped with the Technology Package also feature the Active Front Lighting System (AFS) for the Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights that can swivel up to 12 degrees laterally in response to vehicle speed and steering wheel input. When cornering, the inboard headlight swivels to illuminate a larger area of road surface throughout the corner, thus improving visibility and minimizing blind spots.

Inside, the RL features an elegantly styled interior that includes leather-trimmed heated front seats, comfortable space for rear seat passengers, plenty of storage areas and easy-to-use functionality. Like the driver's seat, the passenger front seat has 10-way power adjustability. As part of the Technology Package, the front seats incorporate six levels of heating and ventilation and the steering wheel and shift knob are trimmed with burlwood trim (the Advance Package adds maple wood trim).

Powertrain

The 2012 MDX uses a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that provides V-8 level power while retaining the size and fuel efficiency of a 6-cylinder engine. The 3.7L develops 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque to provide quick throttle response, outstanding low- and mid-range torque and excellent high-rpm power. To widen the powerband while simultaneously improving fuel efficiency, the 3.7L V-6 has the patented Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) system applied to the intake valves, a computer controlled dual-stage intake manifold and an electronic Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system.

Internally, the 3.7L V-6 makes use of special heavy-duty components including a cast-aluminum cylinder block, high-strength crankshaft, heavy-duty connecting rods, high compression-ratio pistons, high-flow aluminum cylinder heads with integrated exhaust manifolds, unique long-reach spark plugs and other features.

EPA estimated city/highway/combined fuel mileage of 16/21/18 mpg* and a large 21-gallon fuel capacity mean the MDX is perfect for long drives. Like all 2012 Acura vehicles, the MDX complies with the latest EPA TIER 2 – BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards.

The 3.7L V-6 is coupled with a Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission that works with a special multi-clutch torque converter. With comparatively short gearing in the first five forward gears, acceleration is enhanced- while fuel efficiency and quiet cruising are optimized with a relaxed Sixth gear ratio.

The Sequential SportShift transmission offers two automatic shift modes, or can be operated fully manually via racing-inspired steering wheel paddle shifters. Grade Logic Control, Shift Hold Control, Cornering G Shift Control and Hill Start Assist make the 6-speed the most advanced automatic transmission ever offered by Acura. To support the MDX's 5,000 pound towing capacity, a front-mount transmission fluid cooler is standard equipment.

The MDX puts power to the ground through Acura's acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system. SH-AWD® is an innovative full-time all-wheel-drive system that uses torque vectoring to actively distribute the optimum amount of power not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels. With torque vectoring (and by selectively overdriving one outside rear wheel while cornering), the yaw moment of the MDX can be controlled throughout a turn which reduces understeer to greatly enhance handling precision and cornering ability. Working in conjunction with the MDX's standard Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, SH-AWD® provides enhanced power delivery and driver control whether it be on-road or off-road, in dry, rain, snow or ice.

When towing, special Trailer Stability Assist algorithms built into the VSA® logic help stabilize the vehicle after sensing oscillations of the vehicle or trailer. The MDX's SH-AWD® system is further enhanced with hill logic that automatically adjusts the front/rear torque distribution based on the incline of the road.

Chassis

With an emphasis on top-level handling performance, MDX engineers targeted the world-class dynamics and driving feel of the top European SUV competitors. This led to the development of a long wheelbase platform and a sophisticated suspension system tuned at the famed Nürburgring race circuit in Germany

The MDX's 4-wheel fully-independent suspension makes use of MacPherson struts in front teamed with a multi-link rear suspension that is mounted to a rigid unit body structure with isolated subframes. The front suspension also uses unique hydro-compliance bushings that provide excellent ride isolation and chassis vibration control. The rear suspension features aluminum uprights to reduce unsprung weight for improved response, while special trailing-arm mounting points reduce body squat during acceleration.

As part of the available Advance Package, the Active Damper System gives the 2012 MDX an elevated level of handling precision designed to satisfy the most discriminating drivers- all while maintaining a smooth ride. The MDX's Active Damper System features special algorithms that provide two driver-selectable settings-Comfort and Sport-that tailor the suspension dampers for a more comfortable or more sporting ride.

Using "active" Magneto-Rheological fluid dampers and predictive computer algorithms, the MDX's Active Damper System can respond in as little as five milliseconds (0.005 sec.) to individually adjust the damping force of the shock absorbers ahead of actual body movements to provide improved transient handling, road isolation and body control.

The Comfort mode allows for a more relaxed driving experience by prioritizing road isolation and reduced passenger fatigue caused by road inputs, while the Sport mode prioritizes handling response and vehicle body control to allow for spirited driving with high levels of precision and vehicle composure.

For excellent stopping power and control, the MDX employs 13.0-inch diameter ventilated front brake rotors and 13.1-inch solid rear brake rotors along with anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Interior

Attention to detail and supple luxury distinguishes the MDX interior from competitors. Generous use of Milano premium leather with the available Technology Package, excellent look and feel of interior trim materials, front seat headrests with excellent comfort, upscale leather stitching (such as the Lancia-style stitching on the steering wheel and shift knob), a thick steering wheel grip, and copious use of LED interior lighting make it clear that the MDX is focused on top tier luxury.

The MDX features sport contoured front seats with power actuated 10-way adjustability for the driver seat and 8-way adjustability for the passenger front seat. The second-row outboard seats mirror the style and lateral support of the front seats, giving the interior a unique feel that highlights the MDX's blend of sport and utility. Convenience and cargo features abound, including under-floor storage in the rear cargo area and a standard power-operated rear tailgate.

Safety

In keeping with Acura's "Safety Through Innovation" initiative, the 2012 MDX provides excellent safety for its passengers, including the application of Acura's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure.

ACE™ is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. ACE™ utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

In addition, a special frame member located below the MDX's front bumper is designed to engage the front bumper of a lower vehicle, allowing the bumper systems of both vehicles to attenuate crash energy more efficiently.
